Five habits for healthier gums

Five habits for healthier gums

Healthy gums hold your teeth in place and protect the roots underneath. Gum problems often start quietly, without any pain, which is why small daily habits matter more than most people expect.

Five habits worth keeping

  1. Brush twice a day, along the gumline. Angle a soft-bristled brush towards your gums and use small, gentle circles. Scrubbing hard doesn’t clean better and can wear the gums down.
  2. Clean between your teeth every day. Floss, interdental brushes and water flossers all reach where a toothbrush can’t. The best one is the one you’ll actually use.
  3. Don’t stop because of bleeding. Gums that bleed when you brush are usually inflamed, not too delicate to clean. Keep cleaning gently and mention it at your next visit.
  4. Keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes. Frequent sugar through the day feeds the bacteria in plaque. Water between meals is the simplest swap.
  5. Keep up regular checkups and cleanings. A professional clean removes hardened deposits that brushing can’t, and your dentist can spot early changes before you notice anything.
